How the ozone layer's slow recovery actually works

The ozone layer, a region of the upper atmosphere that filters out much of the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation, was found decades ago to be thinning significantly, largely due to certain widely used industrial chemicals that broke down ozone molecules once they reached the upper atmosphere.

A coordinated international effort to phase out those specific chemicals followed, and over the subsequent decades, measurements have shown the ozone layer gradually healing, a slow process given how long the relevant chemicals persist in the atmosphere once already released into it. That quiet accumulation is usually the part least visible from the outside looking in.

The recovery remains incomplete and continues to be monitored carefully, but it stands as one of the clearer examples of a coordinated global response to an identified environmental problem actually working roughly as intended over the long run, even though the full repair was always going to take many decades to complete.
