Why cleaning up a catchment protects everything downstream

A catchment is the entire area of land that drains into a particular river, lake, or reservoir, which means everything happening across that whole area, farming, construction, even suburban gardens, eventually affects the water quality downstream. Protecting a catchment means managing the whole landscape, not just the water itself.

Practical measures tend to focus on slowing and filtering runoff before it reaches a waterway: buffer strips of vegetation along a riverbank, careful management of fertiliser and chemical use upstream, and erosion control on any exposed soil, all reduce the pollutants and sediment that would otherwise wash directly into the water.

Because a catchment can span many properties and even several jurisdictions, protecting one usually requires cooperation between farmers, local councils, and residents who might never think of themselves as sharing a water source, even though everything they do upstream eventually shows up in the water everyone downstream depends on every day.
