A single data point can suggest a direction, but it cannot confirm one. Treating one unusually high or low reading as proof of a new trend, rather than as one possible outlier among many, is one of the more common and consequential errors in reading any evolving situation.
The safer approach waits for a pattern to repeat across several successive readings before treating it as meaningful, since a single point could easily reflect measurement error, a temporary fluke, or simple natural variation rather than any genuine underlying shift in the direction things are actually heading.
