Wildlife corridors: stitching fragmented habitat back together

A protected reserve is only as useful as an animal's ability to reach it. Many species need far more space than a single park can offer, moving seasonally to find food, water, or mates, which means isolated pockets of habitat can slowly become traps rather than safe havens.

A wildlife corridor addresses that by linking fragments of habitat with strips of land, whether a planted river bank, a stretch of native bush, or even a purpose-built overpass, that allow animals to move between them. The corridor does not need to be large, only continuous enough to feel safe to cross.

The payoff shows up over generations rather than seasons: populations that can mix rather than inbreed, ranges that can shift as conditions change, and ecosystems that behave more like a connected whole than a set of isolated islands slowly drifting apart from one another until the whole landscape quietly stops functioning as one system.
