Soil regeneration: rebuilding what farming can wear down

Conventional farming, especially when a single crop is grown on the same field year after year, can slowly wear down the biological richness of soil, stripping it of the organic matter, fungi, and microorganisms that keep it fertile over the long run. Soil regeneration is the deliberate work of rebuilding that richness rather than simply replacing it with synthetic inputs each season.

The methods are mostly old ideas applied with new attention: rotating crops so no single plant exhausts the same nutrients repeatedly, keeping the ground covered rather than bare between plantings, and minimising how often the soil is disturbed by heavy tillage. Each practice on its own is modest, but together they let the soil's own biology do more of the work.

The payoff builds slowly rather than all at once: soil that holds water better during dry spells, resists erosion during heavy rain, and needs fewer external inputs to keep producing well, season after season, which makes regeneration as much a long-term investment as it is a farming technique.
